The Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society (NLFAS) is a charitable organization located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada whose mandate is to celebrate, preserve, and promote the traditional and contemporary folk arts of our province at home and away, through public outreach and events, including our annual Folk Festival.
Active since 1966, the organization presents educational and cultural events that provide artists with the opportunity to showcase their work and that engage our youth and the general public in the transmission of our intangible cultural heritage.
Our two longest running events, Folk Night at the Ship Pub and the Annual Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival are rites of passage for up and coming folk and traditional musicians, and beloved by seasoned performers.

We`re feeling nostalgic as we get closer to our 17th Annual Holiday Wassail, happening in just TWO DAYS! These photos were taken by Chris Deacon at our 2018 and 2019 Wassail events.
Join us at this year`s Wassail on Sunday, December 7th and watch performances by Charla Woodford, Gary Greene, Sandy Morris & Jenny Gear, Bob MacDonald, Harry Ingram, Jackie Sullivan & Luke Mercer and the Mummers & the Paupers, then join in the Sing-A-Long with Len Penton!

This event is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it has become a tradition for many to start of their holiday season with this festive, folk-filled afternoon, featuring songs, stories, mummers, and more!

@nlfolk, St. Gabriel`s Hall, and Fergus O`Byrne present Young Folk at the Hall, a concert featuring traditional music and songs by new and talented Newfoundland artists. Hosted by Fergus O`Byrne, the concert takes place in Marystown on Sunday, December 2.

From his home base of St. John’s, NL, Baraka @brkwav carries with him a sound and spirit sure to deliver a world-class entertainment experience. Originally hailing from the coastal city of Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, Baraka has been performing and writing music since his early teens. Drawing influences from artists such as Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, and Tracy Chapman, he has a natural talent for writing clever lyrics and infectious melodies.
Baraka`s masterful live looping skill as inspired by some of his idols, coupled with his charisma and ability to connect with an audience makes for an electric and engaging "one-man show." Through the guidance and support of Hurricane Music, the 2023 release of his debut EP, Voicemail, has garnered him recognition and respect in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond; earning multiple placements in Spotify Editorial Playlists, the 2023 MusicNL Global Music Artist of The Year Award, and 2025/2025 ECMA African-Canadian Artist of The Year nominations; testaments that he is truly among the very best of his peers.
With plenty of charm, a vibrant smile, and complete devotion to his craft, Baraka continues to play shows in and around the East Coast of Canada, and is in the process of producing his debut album, due in 2025.
